Welcome to our Bed and Breakfast in Ohio!
Our home was built in the late 1870’s by the owner of the local lumberyard and master shipbuilder of the day, Mr. John Wickham; consequently, he left his legacy of beautiful woods—solid black walnut mantels and staircase, red oak and mahogany floors, and more. We are so fortunate to have these pieces of the past. You see, even though the property has seen grand times, it also has experienced very hard times.
Great Lakes captain, Charles Montague, purchased the property in 1890. He and his family—wife Sarah and children Newton and Edith– lived in this grand house until the mid-thirties. The Montagues made their home famous for its grand parties and receptions. It has its roots in hospitality!
Unfortunately by the late fifties the property had been converted to five apartments and it remained any combination of apartments and business offices until 1980. Then, sadly, it sat empty for two years. By 1985 the B&B was born. We purchased the property in 1994 when we were looking for a condominium. So we love to welcome our guests to our “maintenance-free, no-yard work-condo! We have been privileged to be stewards of this magnificent property for seventeen years. During that time we have lovingly restored a room a year and have completely re-landscaped the grounds.
We are proud to have been the recipients of numerous awards, the most recent “Best in the Midwest” 2008-09 by “The Best of BedandBreakfast.com”. This award is based on guest reviews, both quality of the review and the quantity. Others include several beautification awards as well as Best Murder Mysteries and Best Gardens. We have also been featured twice in Midwest Living Magazine as well as other local and national publications for which we are very grateful.
Please join your genial hosts, Judy and Mike Tann, for an online “cook’s tour” of Captain Montague’s B&B and experience their brand of Irish hospitality. Grand pillars, a white picket fence, and a large gazebo delight the eye when surveying the exterior. Entering the home from under the cool green outdoor canopy, the warm glow of the original ruby glass of the front interior doors beckons you to step back in time, savor the warmth of a truly Irish welcome, and be prepared to be pampered. read more
